3 questions to find YOUR Perfect Engagement Session Location
One of the most common questions I get when planning an engagement session is “where should we take pictures?!” There are SO many unbelievably gorgeous spots to shoot it can be difficult to pick. One thing that I’ve found helps narrow down the choices is to look inward as a couple. We have the opportunity to do so much more than just take pretty pictures, we have the opportunity to tell your story! In fact, that is one of the things that gets me excited about my job as a photographer! It’s a chance to visually tell stories. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, well what words are we trying to share with you two? Where did you meet? What’s important to you? What do you two love to do together? Personal touches allow others to see into what it is that uniquely connects and drives you as a couple. Also, it’ll allow these photos to live on after your engagement season as something you two can look back on with memories that truly mean something to YOU! THAT is what can make these photos truly special!
You might be thinking, “That sounds great and all, but how do we find a place like that!?” Below are three questions to help you start to narrow things down so we can capture and share YOUR personal story!!!
1. What esthetic suits your interests and personalities?
Are you city people? Do you come alive when surrounded by the vastness of nature (guilty!), or do you thrive in the intersection of country roads? Start here and it’ll help narrow down the choices from all the possibilities. Once you have the answer to this, you can move forward with where specifically to do the shoot.
2. What is something unique to the two of you?
Next, think about the things you enjoy doing together. Do you enjoy searching record stores for old vinyl together? Or taking walks in a specific part of the city? Do you enjoy biking together? Or preparing meals at home with one another? Engagement sessions are so much fun because they allow a different type of creativity and freedom that we don’t have on a wedding day. We are not working around a schedule of the day or the formality of the celebration so anything is a possibility. The things that you two enjoy together can add a fun element to your photos and help to tell YOUR story.
3. What is a place that is special to you and your relationship?
This could be anything from your first date spot to a place you two often visit together. If it’s a place you call special then it’s probably a good candidate for a session.
Here are a few ideas to get the juices flowing:
At your home & in your neighborhood
Your favorite coffee shop, bar,
Your favorite fast food place or restaurant
A park, beach, or trail that you frequently visit together
A part of the city you love to walk in
A Family Farm
A town you love to visit together
Where you got engaged
The venue you’re getting married at
Give these questions (and examples) some thought and I’m sure you’ll get the wheels turning on a spot that is uniquely yours and will help tell your story through your engagement photos!
